Kickstart career as a UX designer
Hello Folks 👋, My name is Md. Adib and The goal of my career are to become a successful UI/UX designer. A fantastic workshop organized by Growth School sparked my interest while I was creating a case study for my portfolio. My mentor Anudeep Ayyagari taught me a few incredible things that I learned and understood. There will be practical exercises and sessions throughout the 16-day course! In my mind, “Kickstarted” means exactly that!
We begin the workshop with a live sessionđź”´ from UX Anudeep. #studentforlife
Its Starts with questioning🙋
- How did you know how to turn it ON/OFF the switch?
- How did you know where the switch is?
After the explanation of those questions, The design of the switch is such that the ON/OFF switch is solved by positioning the switch in a certain manner. As a result, we begin to think about the world using the 3rd eye. This concept enables us to understand the design around us, such as switches, fans, keyboards, and other things.
In that way, UX design (User experience design) became an integral part of my career. From our third eye, we conclude that products that are easy to use and obvious are considered to be great experiences for users.
Assessment on UI, we have to redesign the Calculator design given in Figma and submit in the discord server #studentforlife

Why does Swiggy shows remmended options and only so few of them, when there is a full menu?
Swiggy should improve their app’s recommendations algorithm to give people more options. Change the filters so that it can show some popular dishes, as well as new ones. Customers will be able to use less data and have an easier time finding what they need!
Why does Netflix show the top 10 trending things to watch when there are lot of other options?
Netflix needs to start showing the top 10 trending things to watch instead of just the default top 10 list, so that people aren’t wasting time trying to find their best entertainment match.

Why do multiple apps show these skeleton like boxes before loading the actual content?
Many apps use skeleton screens, also known as “placeholder UI,” to show a rough outline of the content that is expected to be displayed while the actual content is still loading. There are several reasons why apps might use this approach:
- Improved user experience: Skeleton screens can help to improve the user experience by providing a visual indication that the content is loading and by giving users something to look at while they wait. This can help to reduce frustration and keep users engaged.
- Faster perceived load time: Skeleton screens can also help to create the impression that the app is loading faster by giving users something to look at while the content is still being fetched from the server. This can help to improve the overall user experience and keep users from abandoning the app.
- Better use of space: Skeleton screens can help to better utilize the available screen space by allowing the app to show the expected content layout before the actual content has been loaded. This can help to improve the app’s overall visual design and layout.
Overall, the use of skeleton screens in apps is driven by a desire to improve the user experience, create a faster-perceived load time, and better utilize the available screen space.
Why do apps like Uber do so many animations when the ride is being booked?
There are several reasons why apps like Uber might use animations when a ride is being booked:
- Improved user experience: Animations can help to improve the user experience by providing visual feedback and making the app feel more interactive and dynamic. This can help to keep users engaged and make the app more enjoyable to use.
- Loading indicator: Animations can also serve as a loading indicator, letting users know that the app is working on their request and providing a visual indication of progress. This can help to reduce frustration and keep users informed about the status of their requests.
- Branding: In some cases, an app’s use of animations may be influenced by its branding. For example, an app with a modern and dynamic brand might use more animation to reflect its brand identity.
Overall, the use of animations in apps like Uber is likely driven by a desire to improve the user experience, provide a loading indicator, and reflect the app’s brand identity.
My Learning
01.What’s true is that we interact faster with systems that give us fast feedback. And remember, the transition time is part of this experience of speed.
02.Doherty’s Threshold dictates that a user experience turns from painful to addictive after the system feedback time drops below 400ms.
03.Progress bars help make wait times tolerable, regardless of their accuracy.
04.The animation is one way to visually engage people while loading or processing is happening in the background.
Zeigarnik Effect
People remember uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed tasks.
Workbook on Zeigarnik Effect
Why do multiple apps show a completion rate for things like completing a profile?
Many apps show a completion rate for tasks such as completing a profile to encourage users to complete the task and to provide feedback on their progress. There are several reasons why apps might do this:
- Encouragement: A completion rate can serve as a form of encouragement, motivating users to finish the task and see their progress reflected in the completion rate. This can help to keep users engaged and motivated to complete the task.
- Feedback: A completion rate can also provide feedback to users on their progress, helping them to understand how far they’ve come and how much further they have to go. This can help to keep users informed and give them a sense of accomplishment as they progress.
- Data collection: In some cases, an app’s completion rate may also be used to collect data on user behavior and activity. By tracking the completion rate for tasks such as completing a profile, the app can gather data on how many users are completing the task and how long it takes them to do so.
Overall, the use of a completion rate in apps is likely driven by a desire to encourage users, provide feedback, and collect data on user behavior.
Why do apps like BMS gamify bookings so that you earn something?
Apps like BMS (BookMyShow) may use gamification, or the use of game-like elements in a non-game context, to encourage users to book tickets and make repeat bookings. There are several reasons why apps might do this:
- Encouragement: Gamification can serve as a form of encouragement, motivating users to book tickets and earn rewards. This can help to keep users engaged and motivated to use the app.
- Customer loyalty: Gamification can also help to build customer loyalty by rewarding users for their activity and encouraging repeat bookings. This can help to increase customer retention and drive long-term growth for the app.
- Data collection: Gamification can also be used to collect data on user behavior and activity. By tracking users’ progress and activity within the gamified system, the app can gather data on how users are interacting with the app and how they are responding to different incentives and rewards.
Overall, the use of gamification in apps like BMS is likely driven by a desire to encourage users, build customer loyalty, and collect data on user behavior.
My learning
Here are a few suggestions for how you might use the Zeigarnik Effect to your advantage:
- Break up your learning into smaller chunks: Research has shown that people tend to remember and retain information better when it is presented in smaller chunks, rather than all at once. Consider breaking up your learning into smaller, more manageable chunks and taking breaks in between to give your brain time to process and remember the information.
- Leave some things unfinished: If you’re working on a long-term project or learning something new, try leaving some things unfinished at the end of a study session. This can create a sense of cognitive dissonance that will motivate you to come back and finish the task, helping you to remember the material better.
- Use prompts or questions: Asking yourself questions or using prompts to guide your learning can also help to activate the Zeigarnik Effect. By leaving a question unanswered or posing a problem to solve, you can create a sense of dissonance that will motivate you to continue learning and remember the material better.
- Create a sense of urgency: Finally, consider creating a sense of urgency or time pressure in your learning. Research has shown that people are more likely to remember and retain information when they feel that they need to act quickly or finish a task within a certain timeframe.
Conclusion
Thanks for such an informative two-week workshop. I had a blast. I am extremely grateful and thankful for such a wonderful opportunity. By doing more elaborate visualizations, I have become more confident. I have really enjoyed this journey.
